PUBLIC SPEAKING AND EFFECTIVE PRESENTATION SKILLS

RATIONALE

In almost every job description, there is the requirement that the person filling the role must have “excellent communication skills”. Whether we’re talking in a team meeting or presenting in front of an audience, we all have to speak in public from time to time.

To be effective, step-by-step preparation, method and means of presentation of information should be carefully considered.  Presenting information clearly and effectively is a key skill to get your message or opinion across and, today, presentation skills are required in almost every field.

There are however principles for improving Public Speaking and Effective Communication Skills:

  • Preparation: Planning is the first step to effective communication and should be structured appropriately.
  • Organisation of Materials: Clarity of ideas and good organisation should result in a lively, logical and compelling message.
  • Writing of Presentation: At this stage, you should have concluded development of ideas before selection of points to include in your presentation.
  • Practice: The saying that “practice makes perfect and perfect practice, makes it even more perfect” cannot be overemphasised. Hence the need for thorough rehearsal before delivery.
  • Overcome Nervousness: It’s normal and natural for you to be nervous about public speaking, but you must overcome that fear otherwise known as stage fright, to improve your presentation skills. This course is intended to help participants build the confidence and skills needed for effective presentation delivery.
